DLA contact number

DLA contact numberDisability Living Allowance or DLA is a state benefit for anyone in the UK with a long term health problem or a disability who is at least 16 years old. Claimants can phone the DLA helpline number 0843 487 1814 to speak to an adviser about any aspect of their benefits.

Personal Independence

Disability Living Allowance is being replaced by a new state benefit, known as Personal Independence Payment or PIP, which will start by 2015. In the meantime there will be no new claims for DLA for adults. Anyone in receipt of DLA will receive a letter from the Department of Work and Pensions, explaining how the new payment system will operate. If you haven’t received a letter you should contact an adviser on the DLA phone number.

What does DLA cover?

For existing DLA claimants their benefit is made up of two different payments, a care component and a mobility component. The care component is for people needing help with basic daily tasks including washing, eating or using the toilet, or who cannot prepare a hot meal for themselves. The mobility component is for people who either cannot walk or have great difficulty with walking, including people who are blind or have serious hearing impairment.

Attending an assessment of need

People currently receiving DLA may need to have an assessment to check how much help they will need in future. Letters will be sent out to claimants explaining the assessment process and when and where to attend. You’ll need to take documentation with you, such as a passport or driving licence, so it’s best to check this using the DLA contact number before you go.

What happens if your circumstances change?

Claimants need to contact the DLA helpline if their circumstances change, for example if their health improves or the amount of help is insufficient. DLA payments are not affected if claimants go into hospital for a short time or go on holiday for less than 13 weeks.
